His father, William Jefferson Blythe III, was a traveling salesman who died in a car accident three months before Clinton was born. His mother, Virginia Dell Cassidy Blythe, later remarried Roger Clinton, who adopted Bill. Clinton grew up in a modest home and attended public schools. He excelled academically and was active in student government and debate. In 1964, he enrolled at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., where he studied international relations. Clinton continued his education at Yale Law School, where he met his future wife, Hillary Rodham. After graduating, he returned to Arkansas and began practicing law. Clinton entered politics in 1976, when he was elected Attorney General of Arkansas. He served as Attorney General for six years, before being elected Governor of Arkansas in 1978. As Governor, Clinton implemented a number of progressive policies, including education reform, tax cuts, and increased funding for healthcare and environmental protection. In 1992, Clinton was elected President of the United States. He served two terms in office, from 1993 to 2001. Clinton's presidency was a period of economic prosperity and social progress. He presided over the longest peacetime economic expansion in American history, and oversaw the passage of a number of landmark legislative initiatives, including the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA),the Family and Medical Leave Act, and the Violence Against Women Act. Clinton also worked to improve international relations. He helped to negotiate the Dayton Accords, which ended the Bosnian War, and he played a key role in the Northern Ireland peace process. Clinton married Hillary Rodham in 1975. The couple have one daughter, Chelsea, who was born in 1980. Clinton has been the subject of considerable controversy throughout his career. In 1998, he was impeached by the House of Representatives on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice. However, he was acquitted by the Senate and remained in office. Clinton left office with high approval ratings. He is generally regarded as one of the most successful presidents in American history.
